Early signs and key prevention tips for stomach cancer

In 2010, November was celebrated as stomach cancer awareness month in the U.S. to inform people of food habits, nourishment, and possible cancer risks. Later, in 2012 this month started to be celebrated globally to aware people of stomach cancer. 

This month, various campaigns are arranged to make awareness and educate people about stomach cancer, mainly the possible risks, preventive measures, treatments, and early detection. Besides this, many sessions are arranged where cancer patients share their stories in different media outlets. 

According to health professionals, people are at high risk of stomach cancer who eat fewer fruits and vegetables, smoky food, and salty diet. 

Statistics show that people older than 55 are mostly diagnosed with stomach cancer and this is more prevalent in ages between 60 to 70s. In addition, men are more likely to develop stomach cancer than women and the chance is almost twice. 

Mostly, stomach cancer does not show any symptoms at an early stage, these starts to appear at the advanced stage. Common symptoms include-

  • Pain in the belly
  • Swallowing problem
  • Abdominal distension
  • Indigestion
  • Loss of appetite
  • Experiencing fullness though you are having a small amount of food
  • Nausea 
  • Vomiting 
  • Heartburn
  • Weight loss without any reason
  • Tiredness
  • Black colored stool

Dietary modification, cessation of smoking, and exercise can prevent stomach cancer.
